Biloxi ‘09
Janet and I waited ten long years for an opportunity to see Salt N Pepa perform in person. Last week, our dream finally came

Janet and I with Spinderella, Salt, and Pepa!
true, and it was in fact a dream come true. It was everything we hoped and more. Spin gave us tickets and put us on the meet and greet list, so we got a chance to meet the ladies. Janet and I didn’t go in dressed like typical concert goers.

Janet and I, lookin' good!
We wanted to show them how much we respect them, so we sure didn’t go in to meet them in t-shirts and jeans! Janet bought a beautiful dress for the occasion, and I wore a pair of slacks and a dress shirt and a vest. Check out how good we looked! We had a flower arrangement sent to them before the show. We didn’t get as long with them as I had hoped. Basically, casino staff shuffled people back stage, a photographer snapped a picture, and then you were shuffled out. Spinderella recognized Janet and I which was hella cool! I tried to talk to them, and I did a little bit, but staff seemed like they were on the verge of dragging me out of there, so in order to save face, we walked out. They wouldn’t let us take pics with our own cameras, so the only picture we have of us with the group is the one they took backstage, but it’s a good one! Cheryl was so sweet, she made the photographer take a second picture of us because she was worried her eyes were closed in the first one! Awwe, thanks girl! She wanted us to have a good picture to commemorate the occasion. It is clear that they really do care about their fans. Spin even let me put my arm around her in the picture! Janet made fun of me when we left the back stage area. She was like, “Um…Jeff…do you realize that when you walked in there you said ‘Hey Spindy!’?” I was like, “Oh my god…did I really call her that?!?!?!” I don’t know where that came from, I’ve never heard anybody call her Spindy, but she responded to it, so I guess it was cool!

The arrangement we got for the ladies
Janet and I then took our seats. We were in the orchestra pit on the second row, in the center right on an aisle, which was nice because that gave us plenty of room to dance in the aisle! While everybody was shuffling in and getting seated, there was a DJ spinning some old school stuff. I’m not sure who he was, it wasn’t somebody I knew, but he was pretty tight. Then…Spinderella took the set and Salt N Pepa took the stage! I’m sorry that I can’t give you a complete set list. Honestly, this website wasn’t exactly the first thing on my mind. I wanna say that they opened with My Mic Sounds Nice, followed by Tramp. They also did Shake Your Thang and Get Up. They did all of their classics. They performed Expression and Push It. They gave a great intro to Push It to dispel the misconception that that song is about sex. That night they pushed it for soldiers, single mothers, an end to gang violence, and for President Obama. About halfway through the show, Salt and Pep took a little break while Spin cut up some old school hip hop. They closed with Shoop, but when they were finished making us wanna Shoop, Salt said that she couldn’t leave without taking us to church, and she performed her verse from Stomp by Kirk Franklin. During the set they performed two new songs. One of them was Big Girls, which they have performed at various other functions. The other was one I have never heard or heard of before. I’m sorry I can’t tell you what it is called, I was too excited to hear a new song! It had more of a rock-like feel to it and was very excellent. I’m sorry that I didn’t get a video clip of that one, but I was too wrapped up in the excitement to worry about filming a clip. EDIT: I asked Spin, and she told me the other new song is called “She’s Killin Me”

You make me wanna SHOOP!
Time has been exceedingly kind to these ladies. They look better now than they did ten years ago. They are absolutely, classically, undeniably beautiful. They were beautifully dressed. Janet and I were particularly fond of Spin’s skirt and Pep’s boots.

Spinderella's skirt is beautiful!
They exude at the same time both classiness and sexiness. They are amazing performers. I’ve been to a few shows by some of my favorite artists whose studio albums I love, but their live shows left something to be desired. Salt N Pepa is not one of those groups. They are completely in their element on the stage and they live to perform. Their energy was contagious. I’ve also been to shows which relied heavily on theatrics and special effects. Salt N Pepa don’t need all that crap. All they needed was four back up dancers! And I think they would have been fine without them. Their stage presence is enough to keep the audience engaged. They are performers of such high caliber that they don’t need special effects to distract the audience. I danced through the entire show, not once did I take my seat and I noticed that that was the rule rather than the exception. Everyone in the entire auditorium was on their feet! Pep apparently saw me there in the second row and maybe recognized me from the meet and greet, or maybe she was just happy to see that I was having such a great time, but she made direct eye contact with me and pointed at me. I nearly melted on the spot.

Salt N Pepa shakin things up while Spinderella SHREDS!!!!
All in all, that night was one of the best nights of our lives. Janet and I had not seen each other in almost ten months, so even if there had not been a concert, we still would have had a blast! It is difficult for us to rationalize taking time off work and paying travel expenses for the two of us just to hang out, and this concert was the catalyst that brought us together. We are grateful to Cheryl, Sandy, and Dee Dee for so many reasons. They have provided us with more than twenty years worth of music to enjoy. Salt N Pepa provided the soundtrack to some of the best times of our lives growing up together, and now Salt N Pepa were able to bring Janet and I together for some much needed quality time. The show was amazing. The ladies rocked our socks. That’s fun to say, so I’ma say it again. They rocked our socks. I was a raver back in the day, so I’ve seen many DJs and I like to think that I can recognize a good DJ when I see one spin, and I think that Spinderella really is the best DJ I have ever seen. I had a terribly difficult time deciding whether I wanted to look at Salt and Pepa rap, or watch Spinderella spin! I can’t decide who looked hotter, whether it was Salt rockin’ the mic, Pep gettin’ low, or Spin with one hand on the record and the other hand on the switches. When I move to Portland to be with Janet in a couple months, I’ll be on the west coast and hopefully Janet and I will have some opportunities to see Spinderella cut it up again! We would like to offer our most sincere gratitude for a wonderful night and a wonderful weekend. This was a night we will look fondly back upon for the rest of our lives. Rock on, Salt N Pepa. Rock on. Thank you so much for all that you do and all that you have given us.

Still jealous for not being there, but happy for you guys! Looking forward to reading ALL the details – especially about the two new songs. I know of “Big girls” but what is the other one called and what’s it like?

Klaus – the other new song is called “She’s Killin Me” and it was very guitar heavy. The chorus repeated “You don’t know me” a lot.

Roger, I don’t know if SNP have any plans to tour the UK. As far as whether they want to or not, I cannot speak for them, but I understand that they have long been popular there, so I would think that they want to. That being said, I simply do not know. Sorry I cannot be of more help, but there it is.

Hey guys!! I don’t know if you remember me but I was sitting next to you during this concert. I have some awesome pictures from this concert but couldn’t find a place to post them.
Did you enjoy the rest of your time here in Biloxi?

Yes, Sherri, we had a great time in Biloxi! We were only there for two days and only left the resort twice, but we had a great time. If you would like any of your concert pics posted here, just email them to me and I’ll get them up. I’m glad we met you in Biloxi and thanks for stopping by to check us out online!

Roger, I would love to help you more but there is nothing further I can do. Janet and I are not affiliated with Salt N Pepa in any technical sense. We have no contact with them other than an occasional tweet from Spin directed at me, and haha they certainly don’t ask us about our thoughts regarding their tour schedule! Sorry I can’t do any more.

This concert looks great!!!! I’m so jealous. I really wanted to go to their concert when they came to Los Angeles but my house got broken into the night before on Christmas so I had to stay and do a police report. Nothing important was stolen but it was still weird to deal with. I really do hope I get the chance to see them live. Last time I went to Club Nokia and saw En Vogue live and they were amazing, great voices and they did perform Whatta Man with one of them talking the rap parts…

Adrian- I hope you do get to see them live sometime! They are amazing performers. En Vogue played the IP a couple weeks after SNP and we were sorry we missed them. They are amazing ladies with amazing voices…but I’m sorry, Whatta Man isn’t Whatta Man without Salt N Pepa! I’m sure it was great, but no way was it the same, haha!
